Funding is Now in Place for Major Projects to Improve Ione’s Water Treatment Plant

(Sutter Creek) At their June 11, 2026, Board meeting, Amador Water Agency directors approved lifting the Water Shortage Emergency order which has halted most new water service connections in Ione since January 2024, effective immediately.
The Water Shortage Emergency placed a moratorium on new connections to Ione’s aging water treatment plant until the Agency was able to secure adequate funding to improve the plant’s ability to meet current customer demand during summer peak use periods.
The Agency recently finalized funding to proceed with three major improvement projects which will result in increasing the Ione Water Treatment Plant’s reliable water production capacity by late 2027.
New connections to the Ione system will be subject to meeting the Agency’s existing water conservation requirements to ensure that reliable water supplies will be maintained for existing customers, and any anticipated new connections, while the improvement projects are under construction.
At the meeting AWA Dist. 2 Director Russ Parker emphasized that the Ione Water Treatment Plant projects will not expand the treatment plant’s permitted capacity, but are designed to bring the plant up to reliably meeting the city’s current water demand.
“This is very positive for the City of Ione,” said Ione Mayor Jody Maita, who was present at the meeting.
